The Desolation of Free Presbyterianism

‘Your house is left unto you desolate’

These words came from the lips of God the Son, as He spoke against the scribes and Pharisees of His day in Jerusalem. The text, found in (Matt23:38), brought condemnation upon the religious establishment, which had altered the Word of God to suit its own outlook in society.

Christ saw through the religious veneer that appeared without, and He reproved the hypocrisy within. We are reminded here of God’s Word which declares that;
‘For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1Sam16:7) For a long time the Pharisees had used the Word of God as a kind of cloak, which they altered to suit their particular religious framework.

Free Presbyterianism had to alter its religious robes to accommodate the church’s political wing; this alteration had to do with the doctrine of separation, which had to be tailor made to encompass the arm of flesh. The church opposed Roman Catholicism and ecumenism, while the party opposed Republicanism and tottering unionism. It was a good show, but that was all it was; by and by the mind set changed, their word was no longer their bond; the robes of Righteousness were swiftly replaced with the rags of self righteousness.

Now Free Presbyterianism, inextricably linked to political power sharing with terrorism, finds itself desolate of spiritual strength and moral rectitude. No protests now against secular equality, no opposition against religious terrorist organisations, no separation from compromise; what utter desolation, at a time when God’s people are vulnerable, as the secular humanist armies are being mobilised.

Rev Mervyn Cotton (Heb13:6)
